San Juan Howler Is A Captivating Mountain Bike Race For Participants

“I’m going to come back again next year. I’ll also take up a collection. I’ve lots of friends who run bike shops in California. If I can, I’ll bring along some bikes. If not, I’ll definitely bring a duffel bag full of goodies!”~ 2009 First-time Howler Racer From a video by David Larkins at: http://www.vimeo.com/10741580

The Howler Mountain Bike Race Nicaragua makes a fantastic impression on first-time participants – and that’s an understatement. This young mountain bike event in Central America captures the heartfelt support in the above quote. The San Juan Howler series races for 18K, 28K or 42K now inly in it’s third year. Why not come as a racer and/or visitor to ‘bliss-out’ in this tropical undiscovered paradise.

Racers are motivated to contribute in their own heartfelt ways benefiting nonprofits the Howler supports: Comunidad Connect and Fundacion Tierra involved with social and environmental causes.

Discover What San Juan Howler Offers Racers & Visitors

What benefits are the participants deriving? Raw, beautiful nature in all her awe and splendor. Former U.S. Pro racer Billy Molina settled in Nicaragua over 14 years ago says “In addition to the beauty of San Juan, Nicaragua’s many volcanoes and lagoons can be easily accessed on bikes. I’d lover to see more people attend not only as participants but as observers and admires of what nature has to offer.”

A competitor describes it well “Howler kicked my ass. But it was really cool! Brutal as it was, Howler was an incredible race! I’m returning next year.”

Nicaragua, the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”, gives you unbeatable value for awesome adventures. Mountain bike racers who thrill to the challenge of an unspoiled jungle terrain which consists mainly of single tracks and adrenalin-rushing jump lines is the first thing that attracts racers to the San Juan Howler. A soothing and healing place to recover after the race in San Juan, after the race; an idyllic horseshoe bay bathed in gentle waves is the second reason for racers to come. After the race, the participants can also adventure surf by venturing further out into the Pacific Ocean.

Making It Your Time To Howl

A vacation jewel of Central America, yet to be discovered is a bonus on top of the mountain bike race. Surfing vacations here are better than Hawaii, mainly due to the lesser crowds. Nicaragua’s clear lagoons blessed with nature’s gifts, is definitely the place to go if you have been dreaming of a hiking holiday, scuba diving or a leisurely hiking holiday.

Race Results For The Golden State Mountain Bike Championship In Fontana

The climb up the steep rocky hill sent a waterfall of sweat down my face. The best shooting location was not always on flat ground. After a short vacation from shooting sporting event, I was back in the saddle shooting a mountain bike event in Fontana – the California Golden State Championship #3 in Fontana, CA on May 15th.

Riding fast down the multi-lap course, the cross county mountain bikers I’d seen before at other races, or at least, most of them. At the top of the hill, a race volunteer advised that most of the mtb riders were walking the steep, uphill portion of the course. Today, I chose to photograph the mountain bikers looking strong on the downhill section of the course.

Feeling the heat, the Fontana sun was a reminder that summer was near. The next SRC event in August would add a new level of dehydration for these mountain bike riders. In a four event series, this was the third for SRC and major sponsor Kenda.

A mixture of single track trails and fire roads made up the California Golden State Championship. With one major climb and descent on this multi-lap course, the XC mountain bike riders who had enough energy to smile for the camera during the first few laps had no energy for a pose near the end. A tight 90 degree turn slowed many of the mountain bikers to an almost stand still near the top of the course.

In today’s race, David Santos captured the XC mountain bike race in 1:29:07 with Griffith Vertican and Garnet Vertican earning the 2nd and 3rd place spots in 1:34:07 and 1:41:05, respectively. In the women’s division, Heather Rose captured 1st place and a fourth overall finish in 1:53:12.

For the men, the downhiller with the fastest time for the day was David Klaassen VanOorschot with 2nd and 3rd place going to Rich Houseman and Ryan Egusquiza, respectively. For the women’s division, Gabriela Williams took 1st place followed by Kelly Damschen in 2nd place.

Ryan Equsquiza took on the Super D race as well and won, followed by Eric Bierman in 2nd. Heather Rose, the XC winner, took the Super D winner’s division.
