It almost goes without saying that anyone who is involved in fitness activities is very aware of how cardio helps strengthen the heart. As the heart gets stronger, it becomes a lot more efficient at pumping blood through the whole body. By using a heart rate monitor during your workouts, you ensure that you are really training properly.

The main purpose of a heart rate monitor is to track heart beats per minute, but a monitor does more than that. When you monitor your heart rate you are able to quickly tell whether you’re working out hard enough or if you need to be more intense.

Heart monitor watches are designed for that purpose.

If you’re into a basic fitness program, you don’t need many more features. It’s when you decide to bump your program to the next level, or to begin training for a specific sport that you do need more features.

When you go about selecting the right heart rate monitor, you’ll need to look at exactly which features you need as well as how much money you plan to spend.

There’s not going to be a one size fits all in these heart monitor watches. But here are some advanced features that are available for you.

Most monitors, despite how complex or basic they are will have a few standard features. These might include a chest strap for measuring the heart rate and then transmitting that information to the wrist watch. There will likely also be a timer and an alarm. The alarm can be set to sound off when you go either above or below your targeted heart rate.

Many advanced monitors keep track of workouts and can be set to monitor progress over a set period of time. This lets you compare results and then fine tune your workouts. It’s a wonderful motivator because you can see how much progress you’ve made from month to month.

A feature popular with many athletes is the personalized training program. With this program, you can login to the company website, upload your training records and then get suggestions to further improve your workouts.

Certain monitors are designed for use with certain types of exercise equipment like treadmills, or exercise bikes. You may want to get a coded monitor if you work out mostly in a gym. That way you can avoid interference from other monitors that are nearby.

For cyclists or runners, the GPS is a must feature. When you use a Global Positioning System, you can track the distance you travel and the speed you’re going. You can even take an alternate route and not worry about figuring out how to get home without having to retrace your steps.

Elite athletes often require more detailed data. Advanced monitors have features to give you all the information you need to track.

For example, you can get a monitor that has an altimeter, a barometer, and a temperature gauge. These features are particularly useful for a distance runner. Monitors to calculate respiratory rate as well as oxygen consumption are also available. These are important endurance metrics.

Choosing to use a heart rate monitor is certainly a very smart decision. It’s such an important yet often overlooked piece of fitness equipment. But if you have one, it will enhance a workout and help you get fit faster. Just be sure that you choose a monitor that has all the features you need.

Specialty heart monitor watches are designed for many different sports and activities. If you are a cyclist you may want to have a look at a cycling heart rate monitor.

If you’re serious about fitness, a heart rate monitor has as much importance as the right pair of shoes. Like shoes, a heart monitor is not a piece of equipment where one size fits all. Women need different monitors than men. The best heart rate monitors for women are different from the best heart rate monitors for men.

Face up to it. Most men are able to comfortably wear a heart monitor watch with chest strap. And they can get accurate readings while wearing it. For a lot of women though, this is challenging.

Chest straps transmit data to the heart monitor watch. They do that when they pick up impulses sent from the heart. They then transmit this information to the watch. A problem can occur when there is not good enough contact with the skin.

Now if you are a relatively flat chested woman, you can probably get that good solid contact between skin and strap. So you will be able to use a monitor with a chest strap.

But for women who have bigger cup sizes, wearing a strap can present problems. To get solid contact with the skin, the strap has to be worn very tightly which can be quite uncomfortable.

If you find yourself in this group, there is another option to the traditional type of heart rate monitor. Strapless heart rate monitors have become increasingly popular, particularly among women. These monitors measure heart rate without having to wear a chest strap.

Reviews on strapless heart rate monitors are mixed. Some experts in the field of fitness feel that they don’t provide as accurate a reading as a traditional monitor. Others feel that the technology is approaching the traditional monitor. They do agree that today’s models are much better than earlier ones.

So if you are unable to wear a traditional heart rate monitor, take a look for a strapless model that has high recommendations and is made by a company specializing in heart monitors. You’ll find there are quite a few different designs in strapless heart monitors.

Many strapless monitors are worn on the wrist. Others may have a ring sensor that you wear on your finger. Still other models have a strap that is worn around the upper arm. Finally there are strapless monitors that can be held in the hand.

With a wrist heart rate monitor, for example, there are generally one or two sensors on the watch. Putting your finger on a sensor allows it to collect and display the data on the watch.

It’s hard to say what the best heart rate monitors for women are. Two of the most important factors are accuracy and comfort. Without these you may not use it anyway.

Whether you are a serious athlete or a casual exerciser, heart monitor watches can help you boost performance and improve fitness levels. Although monitors are designed to be worn by anyone, women may be more comfortable wearing a wrist heart rate monitor.

The Polar watch has become a staple in the fitness industry for runners, walkers, and cyclists. Because Polar heart rate monitors are superior in functioning, durability, and overall effectiveness than most competing brands, they are the most often purchased heart rate monitor for cyclists. There are over 30 different Polar models on the market right now, but the ones used for cycling are those designed to strap onto bike handlebars.

The small computers that all Polar heart rate monitors are equipped with allow cyclists to see a wide variety of feedback on their workouts. Some feedback that is often reported back includes: speed, heart rate, distance, and pacing. Many professional athletes use these monitors because they are the key to getting in effective training sessions that pay off on race day. Many amateur cyclists also use them as a way to determine how much fat they are burning and how high their heart rate is going.

This Polar watch range also gives you functions like calorie expenditure calculator, fitness tests and automatic target zone monitoring function, which presents a perfect training gadget for cross-trainers, beginner triathletes and fitness cyclists as well as cyclists who simply wanted to stay in shape.

The most effective way to use these advanced monitor features is to purchase a watch that can transfer stored data directly to a computer. This allows the cyclist to complete their training session then download the information for analysis into the computer. For instance, a cyclist who has completed a variety of fitness tests to monitor changes in heart rate, stress levels, and recovery levels can download the results of those tests right into their computer and find out a variety of information about that cycling session, including: pedal revs, altitude, total distance, exact route taken, ascents and descents, and the continuous heart rate during the workout.

Polar heart rate monitors can be used no matter what the weather is like outside and they are designed to be very easy to use. This ensures that literally anyone can take advantage of them, regardless of their level of expertise in the market. Interfacing the Polar watch with a computer makes it very simple to analyze the results of fitness tests and even get limited updates for the watch.

All of those functional perks do not mean the Polar monitors are completely flawless. For instance, many users complain that data download speeds are incredibly slow and that there can be some inaccuracies with the reported results. The accuracies often come from the inability of the monitor to pause when the user drops speed, such as stopping for traffic when cycling on a busy road. Since the watch continues counting overall heart rate and speed even though the user has stopped completely, the reported data for average heart rate, speed, and cadence can be incorrect.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the top selling Polar heart rate monitors and the features that set them apart in the market. The Polar CS600X is a great sports watch with GPS, G3 technology, and all of the other basic features of a monitoring watch. The Polar CS300, CS100 and CS200cad report top notch feedback on the body and have a nice cadence sensor. The Polar FT40, FT60 and FT80 are some of the smartest watches currently available and all feature separate models for men and women. The Polar RS800CX is a great model for professional athletes because it practically sees everything going on inside the body. It is a limited edition issue designed especially for professional cyclists.

Different Polar heart rate monitors are suitable for different people, depending on their training routines, their need for consistent motivation, and other features that may be advantageous to different people.

Author Lance Durden is a fitness expert that has been using Polar Heart Rate Monitors for use in his programs since 1995. Try polar heart rate monitors from the top online retailer, and start improving your workouts.

At one time, heart rate monitors were mainly used by physicians or nurses to keep track of a patient’s heart rate. It’s all different today. Now. people who are concerned with their health use a monitor because it helps them track their own heart health. Today heart monitors are also used by athletes in many sports or activities to help improve performance.

Heart rate monitors may also referred to as cardiac monitors. Basically, a heart monitor is a piece of electronic equipment used to observe or track various heart functions while the monitor is worn.

When used medically, heart monitors help doctors track a patient’s heart function over a specified period of time. Using this data, they can then compare what they find out and modify the treatment plans if required.

Heart rate monitors are no longer limited to only medical uses. Heart monitors are used by athletes who are involved in a lot of different sports or activities. Each specific model includes specific features depending on the activity it’s being used for.

For instance, some monitors have been designed to be used alongside a weight loss program. There are also heart rate monitors that can be used in fitness programs or by athletes.

The majority of heart monitors have two parts; one part transmits information and the other part receives information. Most heart rate monitors come with a strap that is to be worn around the chest. It’s important for the strap to fit snugly in order to get accurate readings. On the inside of the strap is the device used to detect the electrical activity of the heart.

Readings are transmitted to the watch part of the monitor which is usually worn on the wrist for easy viewing. These heart monitor watches display the readings and then store them for future reference.

There is no doubt that heart rate monitors using chest straps do give the most accurate results, but some people are not able to wear them comfortably. You do have an alternative to this type of monitor.

Strapless heart rate monitors allow you to closely monitor your heart even without wearing a chest strap. The wrist heart rate monitor is designed so that the sensors that are located on the watch do the work that would normally take place through the strap. Simply place your finger on the sensor and the reading will show up on the watch.

Heart rate monitors continue to become more and more popular, as more and more people start using them. Whether you want to monitor your heart rate for medical purposes, or you’d just like to get more out of your workout, heart monitor watches can come in handy.

Whether you are a serious athlete or a casual exerciser, heart monitor watches can help boost performance and improve fitness levels. Although monitors are designed to be worn by anyone, women may find it more comfortable wearing a wrist heart rate monitor.

There are several different pieces of cardio equipment out there that can help you meet your fitness goals. But which one do you choose? Meeting your goals and doing it safely are the primary criteria when choosing your fat killer. In this article I will focus on the big three. The treadmill, stationary bike and the elliptical machine.

The treadmill is one of the most popular forms of cardio exercise equipment at gyms and fitness centers today. If you walk on the treadmill on a level grade the risk of injury is minimal. But in most cases the rewards are minimal. For starters fewer calories will be burned thus leading to less fat loss. Some extremely obese people, and those with physical issues; will find this to be a high impact exercise, and possibly painful. Slow Walking on a flat treadmill has minimal risks for everyone; but also few rewards as it does not burn enough calories or get the heart rate up enough to significantly reduce body fat.

The obvious way to get the most out of your treadmill workout is to turn on the speed and/ or crank up the incline. You can start with a slow jog or increase the incline and have a brisk walk. When your body gets accustomed to that, try running or running/ jogging at an incline. These are tried and true ways to get the fat burning furnace in your body to turn up the heat. But for a lot of people running just isn’t their thing; especially those with the physical limitations mentioned earlier. So what are they to do? Well, the treadmill is definitely not the only answer to your fat burning needs. read on.

Stationary bikes are another common piece of cardio equipmant being used at gyms today. Stationary cycling has the same pros and cons as riding a bike outside (with the exception of crashing!). I believe cycling is more beneficial than jogging and running because you can burn a lot of calories without the high impact pounding to the knees and back that you get from jogging and running. To a lesser degree however; there is some stress to the knees and back that is generated by intense cycling also.

This brings us to the last piece of equipment we will review in this article. The elliptical machine. This is probably my favorite out of the three. It plays really nice with your back and joints and actually gets more body parts involved if you get on one with the moving handles. It is a very versatile machine as you can adjust ramp, resistance and speed. The risk of injury is almost non existent. For a super low impact, fat burning workout, the elliptical is my top choice.

by Gunnar

The following article shows some basic standing yoga asanas for runners, cyclists and triathletes.

Stiff legs is a very common problem in runners and cyclists. Stiff leg muscles can cause different painful problems, e.g. iliotibial band friction syndrome and back problems. For more information about knee problems, in particular Iliotibial band problems, please visit my blog.

The asanas described in this post are especially for newcomers to yoga. They will help you getting more flexible leg muscles and thereby reduce the risk that you will suffer from overuse injuries like IT band syndrome. The poses are named in english and sanscrit to make it easier for you to find videos or pictures of the poses on the web.

Leg flexibility is important to be able to perform the sport specific motions with as little resistance as possible. This will make your run or cycle efficiency better. Another important aspect is, that these asanas will help you avoiding overuse injuries, as Iliotibial band syndrome. My knee pain is gone since I started doing yoga regularly.

In the beginning it is normal that the muscles are so stiff that you can’t get into the postures. Don’t give up because of that! Just do your yoga regularly and you will gain flexibility. It will take some time, but it’s very rewarding.

The postures (asanas) that I suggest for the beginning are the following seven:

Standing forward bend (Uttanasana): This is an excellent pose to extend your hamstrings. It will stretch your gluteus maximus, medius and minimus as well as your spinal muscles too. Precaution is to be made by people with back injury. These people should approach this bend very cautiously. It is important to let gravity do the work, don’t push your body into the pose. If your hamstrings are very tight, bend your knees. That will make the stretch better.

Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I): Cyclist and runners oft experience stiff hip flexors. By doing the Warrior I, the flexibility in your hips, back and groin can be dramatically improved.

Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): As in Warrior I this posture stretches the hip joints and opens the groins and it also stretches the inner thigh muscles.

Side Angle Pose (Parsvakonasana): This is a good following pose of Warrior II. It stretches the back side of the legs and opens the groin. At the same time it also stretches the upper body.

Triangle Pose (Trikonasana): A follow up of the Warrior I pose. Above all the hips are getting worked on here.

Intense side stretch (Parsvottanasana): This pose work on your hamstrings and gluteus maximus. It gives you a more intense stretch for your hamstrings than you get in the standing forward bend.

Wide stance forward bend (Prasarita Padottanasana): This posture is sometimes also called wide-legged forward fold and is related to the standing forward bend. The difference is that the feet are wide apart in this posture. This posture is also a very good stretch for your hamstring and the gluteus maximus.

To get the most of the poses described above, stay for five deep breaths in position. By doing the poses regularly you will open up your groin and increase the flexibility in your legs and hips. This will reduce the risk of getting problems with overuse injuries. I recommend doing these asanas at least three times a week and when you have done them for 2 months we can go to the next level.

I hope these Yoga asanas will help you enjoying your sport!

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight before, you know that it’s not necessarily easy to do. The reason is that we don’t understand how our metabolisms work; and it’s not as if our bodies can send us a letter explaining everything for us! We weigh ourselves and see how our diet or fitness plan is working out. If things aren’t progressing as you’d hoped, then you need to determine why. Most of the time it’s difficult to understand why our weight loss plans aren’t going as we’d wanted.

One common reason that fitness programs fail is that you aren’t hitting the heart rate you need to start burning fat as you exercise – but of course, you’re wondering how you can tell if this is the case. You used to have to stop your workouts to check your pulse – and since you stop, it can be hard to get a truly accurate heart rate reading this way. Thankfully, with heart rate monitors as great as the Polar F11 heart rate monitor, you no longer have to stop in mid-workout or guess if you’re getting the results you want from your workout.

Of course, there are many different heart rate monitors on the market. Why should anyone infer that the Polar F11 is more valuable than any other model on the market? That is a fair question and the answer is because the Polar Company has gone to great lengths to ensure that it has delivered a top of the line product to the marketplace. It has not devised a run of the mill and derivative heart rate monitor. As such, consumers that purchase the Polar F11 can rest assured they are receiving a quality product.

So what makes the Polar F11 heart rate monitor so much better than all of the other monitors out there? This heart rate monitor outperforms others in every area, including:

The large, high quality, easy to read display of the Polar F11 lets you get an accurate heart rate reading as you workout; you won’t have to stop to see your heart rate and you can make the most of every workout.

The Polar F11 heart rate monitor has a higher accuracy than any other monitor on the market. The heart rate you see displayed is accurate and up to the second.

The Polar F11 is an incredible durable heart rate monitor. While many will use their Polar heart rate monitors for jogging and other light impact activities, there are those that enjoy burning calories while taking part in extreme activities. So, someone that loves to burn fat while mountain climbing will need a heart rate monitor that can stand the elements. The Polar F11 can definitely deliver in this regard.

Unlike many other heart rate monitors out there, the Polar F11 is comfortable – it feels just like a wristwatch, so you won’t even notice it except when you’re checking the display!

Of course, there are many more positive benefits to the Polar F11 heart rate monitor. It is definitely one of the best products that Polar puts out. When you truly look at the complete scope of the Polar heart rate monitors that have been produced and compare them to the Polar F11, you truly realize how special this heart rate monitor is.

In the never-ending search for a perfect exercise/recreation vehicle, parents often turn to such unique items as jogging strollers and low rider bikes, for the purpose of including youngsters in the daily activity. Why low rider bikes and jogging strollers?

Running/Riding Parents

Let’s look at the needs of a parent who wants to take a young one along for the ride (or run). Some parents know that they will continue running as recreation and exercise even after they have children. In order to do this safely it is often necessary to find specialty equipment. A jogging stroller is certainly one method of including family members. Specially designed bikes that can accommodate small children are also on the priority list for many parents.

Necessity is the mother of invention. As marketing pros in this business know, young mothers needed a way to take their toddlers along when continuing a life-long habit of jogging for exercise and health. Putting on running clothes and those special shoes again after the birth of a child means a lot to young parents, but many of these folks don’t have the option of leaving the child with someone, however safe that choice might be. Enter the jogging stroller and the low rider bikes that can be perfect for this situation. With this relatively new equipment, moms could reassert their independence, get away from home for a while and include the new baby in a healthy outdoor activity. (New fathers have taken to this method of exercise quite well, according to industry figures.) Even the dog can get into the act.

How Much Do I Spend?

First of all, these strollers may be a bit more expensive than another type of infant/child stroller. Low rider bikes don’t have to be so costly, because the parents of a new baby or toddler will not be looking for the custom-designed “hot rod” bike that many think of when low rider bikes are considered.

Trying to save money at this point is not a good idea. Solid construction and durability are key. For a stroller, plan to spend $300 to $500 dollars. The extra cost will be worth it in the long run. A quality low rider trike may cost $500 or more, but many of these include a love seat or rumble seat with safety belts (ideal for taking the youngsters along).

There is also a secondary/used market for strollers and specialty bikes. Garage sales, newspaper classifieds and Web trader sites are good places to buy these items without breaking the bank.
